Q: Who can use the Council on Aging's and Senior Center's services?
A: The Greenfield Council on Aging/Senior Center serves people age 55 and up. In addition, we welcome the participation of younger adults who are disabled. In case of limited space or enrollment, activities and services may be limited to Greenfield residents.
Q: Do I need to join or become a member?
A: Everyone who visits the Senior Center checks in at the reception desk upon arrival. There is no membership requirement. The GCOA uses a simple scan card system to track attendance and statistics.
Q: Are there charges for the activities and services?
A: Most of our activities are free of charge. Others invite voluntary donations. A few require fees.
For more information, call our Activities Director at (413) 772-1517.
Q: How do I learn more about Council on Aging/Senior Center activities?
Our free, "Senior News", is distributed monthly at many drop-off sites throughout town, including Town Hall, the Library, some senior housing sites, and other locations. It is also available at the Senior Center. You may call (413) 772-1517 to request one, and we'll mail one copy free of charge. On the back page of the newsletter is a subscription form if you'd like to have it mailed directly to you each month. For more information about any programs, the staff is happy to speak with you.
Q: Do I need to pre-register for anything or may I just drop-in?
A: Drop-ins to the Senior Center are always welcome. However due to limited space, pre-registration is required for some events and trips. It's best to ask in advance about a particular group or activity. Please contact a staff person for more information.
Q: How can I get involved as a volunteer?
A: Volunteering to support your community is an extremely rewarding experience. Volunteers help in many different ways and we consider them to be "unpaid staff". To find out about volunteer opportunities please contact one of the GCOA staff, and ask about filling out a volunteer job application.
COA board members are some of our most important volunteers. COA meetings are held monthly and are open to the public.
Q: How do I get help for my mother/father/relative/neighbor?
A: Family members, caregivers, and neighbors frequently contact us for information about services that help keep elders living safely and independently in their homes. Please speak with one of our staff. We can help link you to local programs and services, even if you live far away. Also, please check out our links page for more info.
I don't drive. How can I get to the Center?
A: The Franklin Regional Transit Authority (FRTA) operates two types of bus service: regularly scheduled routes and Demand Response. Please call FRTA at 773-8090 for more information or to schedule a ride.
Q: How do I arrange for a Medical Ride?
A: Med-Rides are available to those over 60 who have medical appointments outside of Franklin County. You must make appointments for rides at least 48 hours before to the appointment. And you must be ambulatory (get around on your own). For more information, please call the Greenfield Council on Aging at 772-1517 and speak to MaryAnn at Extension 1. Click here for infomation
