Triathlon Races into Greenfield on Sunday, August 6

GREENFIELD – People from across the country will swim, bike and run during this year’s Greenfield Triathlon on Sunday, August 6. The triathlon begins at 8 a.m. Hosted by the Greenfield Recreation Department, the Greenfield Triathlon invites participants to trek across the city’s picturesque back roads and notable landmarks, such as the Historic Eunice Williams Covered Bridge and the Green River Swimming Area.

So far, nearly 200 people have registered to participate in this year’s event. Normal registration concludes on Friday, August 4, at 12 p.m. Late registration is also available on Saturday, August 5.

Known as the longest-running triathlon in New England, the Greenfield Triathlon attracts athletes from throughout the country, including California, Colorado, Washington D.C., Rhode Island, North Carolina, New York and the New England region.

Greenfield’s triathlon offers international and sprint distances for individual athletes and two and three-person teams. The different options make the triathlon an accessible event for seasoned triathletes and beginners. The event champions one mantra – “to finish is to win.”

The Greenfield Triathlon welcomes participants ages ten and older. Each year, the youngest athlete to finish the triathlon receives the Patrick Bell Award, while the Nook Burniske Award commemorates a participant who embodies positive sportsmanship. Awards will also be presented to the top three finishers in each age division.

Two roads, Nash’s Mill Road and Eunice Williams Road, will be closed to accommodate the triathlon. Their closure occurs from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Road marshals and traffic control officers from the Greenfield Police Department will be at major intersections along the triathlon’s pathway.

All race proceeds benefit the Greenfield Recreation Department. The Greenfield Triathlon has raised thousands of dollars to support programs and events for families within our community. The Recreation Department is actively seeking volunteers to help during the triathlon event. Interested individuals can contact Recreation Director Christy Moore at christy.moore@greenfield-ma.gov to learn more.

“Each year, I’m amazed at the strength and determination of our tri-athletes as they conquer each leg of the race in an effort to cross the finish line. Spectators are always welcome to witness this inspiring event,” said Greenfield Recreation Department Director Christy Moore.

The Greenfield Triathlon is a USA Triathlon-sanctioned event and partners with the Massachusetts Senior Games. Health New England, Greenfield Savings Bank, AMR, Bicycle World, Chamois Butt’r, C&S Wholesale Grocers, Pioneer Valley Wood Art, and Silver Screen Design are sponsoring the triathlon.
