Sanitary Sewer Overflow Emerges in Greenfield Monday, December 18 at 10:30 A.M.


GREENFIELD –A sanitary sewer overflow surfaced in Greenfield on Monday, December 18, 2023, at 10:30 a.m.

The City Greenfield, WPCF, DPW reported the overflow immediately. The discharge consists of untreated sewage and waste. The untreated sewage discharged from a regulator chamber outfall behind 302 Deerfield Street located along the Green River. This is located at Lat 42 0 34 37” Lon 76 0 36’ 33”.

The overflow is discharging at a rate of 366 gallons per minute. It was caused by heavy to moderate rain during a flood watch.

The sanitary sewer overflow is impacting the Green River and Deerfield River in Greenfield, as well as the Connecticut River in Deerfield, Montague and Sunderland. The overflow does not impact drinking water.

Avoid contact with these water bodies due to increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants. Once the overflow concludes, community members will be asked to avoid contact with these water bodies for an additional 48 hours.
