Sanitary Sewer Overflow Concludes in Greenfield Saturday, March 23 at 9:30 PM


GREENFIELD –A sanitary sewer overflow surfaced in Greenfield on Saturday March 23, 2023, at 7:35 p.m. before concluding at 9:30 p.m.

The City Greenfield, WPCF, DPW reported the overflow immediately. The discharge consists of untreated sewage and waste. The untreated sewage discharged from a regulator chamber outfall behind 302 Deerfield Street located along the Green River. This is located at Lat 42 0 34 37” Lon 76 0 36’ 33”.

The overflow discharged 20,881 gallons.. It is caused by heavy to moderate rain during a flood watch.  

The sanitary sewer overflow is impacting the Green River and Deerfield River in Greenfield, as well as the Connecticut River in Deerfield, Montague and Sunderland. The overflow does not impact drinking water. 

Avoid contact with these water bodies due to increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants. Community members will be asked to avoid contact with these water bodies for an 48 hours from the overflow’s conclusion (Monday, March 25 at 9:30 P.M.
