Greenfield Council on Aging Selected by Big Y for Community Bag Program

GREENFIELD – Store leadership at Big Y’s 237 Mohawk Trl., Route 2, Greenfield, Massachusetts location has selected the Greenfield Council on Aging to receive a $1 donation from every purchase of the store’s $2.50 community bag for the month of August.

The Community Bag Program facilitates community support with the goal of making a difference in the vicinity where shoppers live and work. More than $340,000 has been donated to over 2,000 local nonprofits since the program launched in January 2019.

Store leaders choose a different nonprofit to benefit from the Community Bag Program each month. Nonprofits meeting Big Y’s qualifications are submitted to their database of thoroughly researched organizations near each store location.

Through the John Zon Community Center, the Greenfield Council on Aging provides services to seniors aged 55 and over from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. A free membership to the Council on Aging is the only requirement to participate at the center, with some programming requiring pre-registration while others are drop-in gatherings.

Some of the center’s senior services include noontime meals, physical fitness classes, health promotion activities, recreation events and technology information sessions. The activities support the Council on Aging’s holistic mission of providing an environment that promotes personal dignity, opportunities for sharing, creative expression and learning for the senior community.

"We're absolutely thrilled to be the recipient of the Big Y Community Bag Program in August,” said Council on Aging Director Hope Macary. “Community support such as this enhances our capacity to provide programs and services to Greenfield's seniors."
